I can expand PDF Documents and also the regular Documents here and you can see all of these now. It will expand it and fill the rest of this column and the next one, the next one, and then PDF Documents is still there as a stack afterwards. I can collapse it again into a single item.
When I click on one, like Documents here, it expands it and it fills the rest of this column and the next column with just those documents. So here it has figured out that all of my files really fall into three categories. Turn that on and it collapses all of your files, really neatly, into these little categories. Then you go to View and you'll see Use Stacks. So you want to be in Finder but you also want to click on the Desktop to make sure another Finder window isn't what is selected.
You can turn it on by making sure you have Desktop selected. But it does do the same thing in that it groups files together. So the way that these Desktop Stacks work is different than Doc Stacks if you've ever used stacks in the Doc. So something in Mojave called Desktop Stacks allows you to kind of temporarily to get a handle on this. Maybe the best of intentions are that we just want to store them temporarily and find a better place for them in the Documents folder later on but we end up with a mess. At lot of times we just put files on the desktop when we don't know where else to put them. Change how Mac desktop stacks are grouped To close or collapse all the Stacks, simply click again on any of the open Stacks and meanwhile hold the Option key. If you want to open up all the Stacks at once, with the Option key hold and click on any Stack. After finishing viewing, click the Stack again to collapse it. With the Stack expanded, when you click on a file, it will open up with the default app you're setting for. If you want to view all of the files that are contained in a Stack, just click on it, and it will expand the Stack and a down arrow will appear on the Stack's name so that you know which Stack you're browsing. Most of the available Stacks on Mac include documents, images, PDF documents, spreadsheets, screenshots, and others.
Turning on Stacks will automatically organize your Mac desktop.

If you want to turn Stacks off and get a full view of all the files on the desktop, just go back to the Use Stacks option again and uncheck it. Or right-click the desktop, choose Show View Options, then change options. On your Mac, click the desktop, choose View from the menu bar > Show View Options, then change options with your preferences. And you can do more to make Stack icons bigger, change the spacing between icons, move icon labels to the side, or show more information (such as file size or how many files are in a Stack). Generally speaking, after you select the Use Stacks option from Finder or desktop, all the file stacks will go to the right side of your Mac screen.
